Bleaching Precautions

Bleaching Precautions

Opalescence Full custom tray whitening is a 35% carbamide peroxide base oxygenating agent and Opalescence Tres’ White is a 9.5% hydrogen peroxide base oxygenating agent.

It is suggested that you start Brushing with Sensodyne toothpaste at least one or two days prior to starting at home whitening.

The hydrogen peroxide literally penetrates through the outer enamel layer and into the dentin layer beneath. Thus, it is expected you will have some tooth and/or gum discomfort for a few days. This is often the case with patients who have a history of tooth sensitivity and/or gum recession.

If the discomfort is too uncomfortable, please stop bleaching for 2-3 days, and then resume. Brushing with the Sensodyne toothpaste will also aid in diminishing this sensitivity.

Also, it is not unusual for your gum tissue to blanch (turn white) slightly; more so when using Opalescence Whitening products. This is attributed to a little of the bleach working its way onto the tissue. In a few days this will clear up with gentle salt rinses.

If you have persistent discomfort, please call our office immediately.
